He was disemboweled for sacrilege. In Braveheart , Gibson's face is shown contorted in pain, but whatever happens below the waist is not shown on film.
There is a shot of several knives on a table and another one of the executioner ripping off Gibson's shirt with a bladed weapon, but the viewer never sees how they are used. The mark of a truly exceptional executioner was that they could not only pull the heart out of a criminal's chest, but they could also keep it beating the whole time.
While there's no record of Wallace's hangman's success in terms of keeping his heart beating, Wallace did have his heart removed after his entrails and genitals. The hangman then declared , "Behold the heart of a traitor," as he held it up for the crowd to see. If Wallace somehow managed to survive having his heart torn from his chest, he certainly didn't make it through what came next.
The executioner cut off his head , thereby sealing his fate. The film did not show Gibson's heart being ripped out of his chest cavity, but it did show him clutching a piece of bloody cloth as the axe fell down towards his neck. Wallace was beheaded for being an outlaw. After Wallace was beheaded, he was quartered, which entails all four limbs being tied to separate horses, which then pull apart the body.
Afterwards, Wallace's quartered remains were put on display around London as a warning. A piece each was hung at Berwick, St. Johnston, Stirling, and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In the film, a voiceover by Robert the Bruce describes how Wallace's body was torn into pieces and his head and limbs were displayed all over Britain as a warning to enemies of England.
Wallace was quartered for " divers depredations. In the movie, the executioner allows Wallace to bargain for a more merciful death if he accepted the rule of England. According to British historians, this is a load of bollocks. Miraculously, Wallace would still be alive.
As is the English execution custom, his heart would have been gouged out from his chest. Then, Wallace would have been beheaded post-mortem by one of those guys in the spooky cloth hoods.
His head would have then been displayed on a spike on the London bridge. He believed that if Wallace shows resignation, he will win his personal 'fight' against him. After stretching and racking him, they put William on a cross, and began disembowelment, so that he had to suffer serious pains.
Now the crowd had compassion with him. They shouted out for mercy. The crowd got their personal impression of William. Of course the English nobles demonised him and his motives, and told the people that he is a brutal murderer.
However, Wallace only had to say the word mercy and everything would be over. As everyone expected that he would say mercy, he shouted out the word freedom. This last word freedom stands for William Wallace and his famous actions. He was living to be free. At this point the executioner had also compassion with him. At first it seemed, as if it is a satisfaction for him to torture Wallace in such a brutal. You can read this from his face.
Short before the death, his wife Murron appeared to him like an angel. Then the famous Scottish hero was beheaded. Main characters:. Tasks and of the appearing persons:.
